CHARACTER INFORMATION
Character Name: Mitsuhide Akechi (Tenkai).
Age: Mid-thirties.
Canon: Sengoku BASARA 4.
Canon Point: End of Normal Route.
Character Information:
Mitsuhide acted once as loyal retainer and general to the Demon King, Oda Nobunaga. He took great delight in the slaughter of innocents and the everlasting battlefield. The fire of the war that Nobunaga spurred forth would be eternal and no one of the Oda Clan would go unsatisfied (because it was Mitsuhide's truest belief that everyone loved the bloodshed just as much as he did). This was a gift that the Demon King was granting everyone – to be forever stained in the red of battle!
And this was where things got a little strange timeline-wise. In Sengoku BASARA 3 Utage, Nobunaga was killed just before he completely took Honnou-ji. Mitsuhide became completely distraught and lost without the man telling him where he should go and kill. He could not stand his depression so sought death at the hands of Matsunaga Hisahide. Hisahide, however, found his plight to be hilarious and instead “stole away” Mitsuhide's name and “turned” him into the monk, Tenkai. In Sengoku BASARA 4, none of that actually happened yet; however, everyone acted like it happened.
Repeat: Nobunaga was still alive in Sengoku BASARA 4 yet Mitsuhide was broken to become Tenkai by Hisahide for ““reasons.”” Everyone was pretty confused about what was happening; Mitsuhide was the most confused about what was going on in the timeline and wasn't sure at what point anything was happening.
Think of practicing and knowing a play by heart like “Romeo and Juliet,” then coming to the stage to find out everyone was singing out “Hamilton.” Mitsuhide kept just trying to come in at the most logical point to say his lines. Everyone just acknowledged both plays at the exact same time and Mitsuhide was just trying to figure out if he was supposed to be “Tenkai” or “Akechi Mitsuhide”, but nobody felt like cluing in him so he was both at the exact same time when he should not be able to be given how badly Hisahide supposedly fucked him up.
Sometime in that mess, he met Kobayakawa Hideaki (Kingo). Kingo was an absolute pathetic, overweight teenager that spent most of his time crying and being bullied by pretty much everyone. All he wanted to do was sit and eat, but he kept being called out to fight in battles (read: be cannon fodder). In meeting “Tenkai,” Kingo felt that a sadomasochistic gimp was the best person to act as his protector – and surprisingly, he was right. Given how many people felt like punching Kingo in the face, Mitsuhide had more than enough people to keep his kill-quota high but stranger still was that he grew to care about the butterball. He actually became something of a mother-hen to him. A disturbing, bondage-bloodplay obsessed mother-hen.
So, the Normal Route in Sengoku BASARA 4 had Mitsuhide trying to decide if he should return to the Oda Clan or if he should remain at Kingo's side. Kingo overheard his concerns and told him to follow his heart (oh, honey, no). Thankfully, Mitsuhide came to the decision that he would rather remain as “Tenkai,” and live in the peaceful world with his fat teenage-child. (This worked out very well because if he attempted to go back to the Oda Clan, Nobunaga would have acted like a jealous scorned lover and kill him for “reasons.” Or ignored him entirely and went on with his life as if nothing happened which would be just as bad, 'cause Mitsuhide thought they had a THING. Life was rough in the Oda Clan, what can anyone say?) And so, he lived happily ever after with his new family and all the bloodshed that he could take.
Personality:
So, what kind of hot mess is Mitsuhide?
He doesn't have multiple personalities, but he is constantly trying to figure out which “version” of himself is the real one. He is trying to reconcile two ideas of himself – Akechi Mitsuhide and Tenkai. Even in canon, he never figures it out. Mitsuhide just decides to choose a personae to live as versus actually sure if the one he chooses is really “him.” The crisis of identity stems from his disturbing parasitic relationship with Nobunaga Oda and his guardianship of Kingo. But since neither in Ryslig, he will be alternating between the different personae until he decides which one “fits” him best without either present.
No matter the personae, there is always an almost unquenchable thirst for blood and death. Murder and dismemberment act as enjoyable pastimes for him. He does not even care if he is the one that is suffering, and will take great pleasure in the pain. Pleasure being the important word in that sentence. Mitsuhide often writhes about in ecstasy after each strike; he tends to make battling him extremely sexual (and uncomfortable) due to his perverse joy out. His entire body could be broken, torn, bloodied, and he would still reach out to his assailant begging for more. It is because he finds release through agony. He believes that it helps him to become more human, because through shared pain he feels a connection. The obsession that he has with Nobunaga stems from this depraved understanding of human interactions; the Demon King's cruelty to others matches Mitushide's desires for personal ruin.
That is what originally causes his depression. He first thinks there is no one else in the world that he could form an attachment with besides Nobunaga. And no matter the situation, he remembers and thinks of the Demon King fondly. Their relationship is extremely destructive and unhealthy with two intense degrees to it. Either, the two of them are completely in-sync with each other or Nobunaga pretends to have absolutely no connection and no idea who he is (emotionally manipulating and psychologically breaking him at a moment's notice). But still, Mitsuhide greatly cares about him and holds him at the highest esteem. However, causing him to be so grossly obsessed, he doesn't know what to do with his emotions and mixes them with his usual sadomasochistic desires. Hence, as much as he obsesses over Nobunaga; he also wants to kill him.
The point of being a general for the Oda Clan is to focus on brutality over subtle moves. Sometimes, there would be call for quieter gestures to ensure that all the pieces are in place but it mostly relates to the amount of destructive power that they have in their arsenal and how absolute they can crush their enemies. Assassinations and poisonings are the way that they handle most of their business. Mitsuhide has the best mind when it comes to ensuring complete victory in the cruelest way imaginable. It does not need to have any finesse to it so long as the ending result has the body and soul splattered across the landscape. That is the kind of genius that he has – in torture, in all manners of pain.
With his relationship with Kingo, he actually considers this “pretending” at being a human because he has no desire to hurt him in any way. Mitsuhide only lightly bullies him through non-malicious jokes and teasing; he would never want the butterball to actually be afraid of him. He's even known to cook all sorts of meals for him – and showing that he's a surprisingly good cook. It's with Kingo that he lives a much more peaceful life where he gardens and ensures a crybaby lordling is well taken care of, to the surprise of everyone. The only time that Mitsuhide actually raises his voice is when he needs Kingo to run due to the situation being too dangerous for his charge to hide behind him until everything is over.
Oh, at first, he did want to manipulate Kingo for his own devices. He could easily take control of the young man's forces and start a war with the others. But legitimate care and concern eventually developed which is what has allowed the other generals to cease seeing Mitsuhide as only the monster of the Oda Clan; to cease think that he is going to do anything to warp Kingo. In fact, Mitsuhide often tells others that he would like for Kingo to remain the way that he is – and does everything that he can to shelter the young man from the real horrors of what battle could be. Because while he does, as stated, take great pleasure in these horrors; he does not want Kingo to witness or enjoy them as he does.
And that is why he is such a hot mess. Those are the insanely conflicting ideas of himself literally tears him apart at times. Once or twice, he attempts to harmonize the two which actually places him in most vulnerable psychological state since they're so contradicting. This is not him switching between “Mitsuhide” and “Tenkai,” but attempting to take what he has learned as Tenkai to alter his relationships with others as Mitsuhide. It doesn't work; he tries to make the monster that he has always been become a softer human. All it does is show him how flawed he is and causes emotional and mental distress. In the end, he finds himself wishing for Nobunaga to order him what to do, which is why so often that he attempts to resurrect the Demon King before Sengoku BASARA 4.
Surprisingly, in Sengoku BASARA 4, Mitsuhide shows that he cares about those in the Oda Clan “before” he becomes Tenkai. He always has a murderous-obsessive relationship with Nobunaga, but he thinks that he may actually kill the man. Given how much of his life was originally focused completely around him, and what happens the last time that Nobunaga dies, he fears the worst. He fears what would happen to Nouhime and Ranmaru Mori – the Demon King's wife and the young charge. The relationship that he shows to have with both of them is relatively positive (even if he is always squabbling with Ranmaru); he is a lot more rough with Ranmaru than he is with Kingo, but he still attempts to keep him out of harm's way. That is why he imprisons both Nouhime and Ranmaru far to the north of the country – and leaves them there. He worries what will happen to them and attempts to keep them completely out of war's fire. He doesn't recognize it fully as caring and worrying about them, however, because his obsession with Nobunaga keeps him from seeing that he has any connection or attachment to anyone else in the Oda Clan.
Like, O-Ichi and Katsuie. With O-Ichi, he recognizes that Nobunaga has broken and forces her to be dependent upon him. In her, he sees himself but doesn't see anything wrong about their state. They both only escapes when she meets Nagamasa and Mitsuhide meets Kingo; yet when he talks about it with her, he completely believes that they will once more return to their lives ruled by Nobunaga. But while he finds that to be a pleasing end as much as living “as a human,” she doesn't. In some ways, one wonders which one was more broken by the Demon King. Both of them gave up something of themselves so that they could serve their lord, but it may be that Mitsuhide gave up too much of himself.
As for his relationship with Katsuie, he doesn't really treat him all that well. Katsuie is old and capable enough to take care of himself, so the same odd-doting that he does with Ranmaru isn't seen with him. His half-sentences and orders were a means of tormenting the young general; to direct him to battle after battle under Nobunaga's desire for a hellish scenery. In his mind, it may be a way to return to the good graces of the Demon King in letting their lord see how many bodies and blood can be spread upon the land. After all, normally with traitors, he would just kill them painfully to learn their lesson in death. He seems to wish the young general carry on the Oda Clan when Nobunaga and he ascend to the “ocean of the heavens,” and is under the belief that is how the Demon King also views Katsuie. So, yes, he views Katsuie fondly and tries to make him into a person who could handle the strain of the Oda Clan's bloodlust. Sadly, until he puts it into words, it appears that he is only tormenting Katsuie for his own enjoyment. It didn't occur to him how it actually must have been to Katsuie. He never considers how he treats him to be “cruel,” he believes that he is only being “very strict” with him.
Also for someone who doesn't say anything sexual or flirtatious, he usually sounds like he actually is making advances on others (and sometimes he actually is). It mostly has to do with the breathy way that he speaks; the half-sentences that are broken off with laughter. He sometimes just gives the feeling that a person needs to take a shower after talking to him. Yeah, even though his image has been mostly cleaned up thanks to Kingo, he still is has full-on “creep moments.” Not to mention how he talks to members of the Oda Clan; they are even more broken sentences than what he already speaks, sometimes they are filled with violent imagery that seemingly has no bearing on what is presently happening, and somehow he is understood. (That, too, is why he loves the Oda Clan)
